Doug Gilmour laces up for HNIB

The stars are sharpening their blades for some ice time in support of the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s cancer-care centre.
Maple Leafs great Doug Gilmour will join other hockey stars Aug. 16 at the Barrie Molson Centre for the fifth annual Hockey Night in Barrie. The series has already raised more than $600,000 for the RVH.
“We are set to make Hockey Night in Barrie V the biggest charity hockey game yet,” said MP Patrick Brown, the event’s organizer and originator.
Gilmour is best known around these parts as a former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who led the team to the closest it has been to a Stanley Cup final since 1967. It took Wayne Gretzky leading the Los Angeles Kings to a seventh game overtime win in the 1993 western conference finals to keep the Leafs out of a Cup meeting with the Habs, the eventual cup winners.
TO was not Gilmour’s only stop – St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames also benefited from his talents, particularly the Flames who won the cup in 1989 with Gilmour in the lineup.
The gifted player also holds the Leafs’ record for most points in a season (127) and most assists (95). He netted 450 goals and 1,414 points in 1,474 regular season games, is a two-time NHL all-star and recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy for best defensive forward.
Gilmour made it into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
“I remember growing up to Doug Gilmour’s playoff heroics for the Maple Leafs in 1993 and 1994. He will always be remembered for his killer instincts with the Leafs and of course his Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames. He will be amazing addition to Hockey Night in Barrie line up,” said Brown.
Barrie Colts’ standout Tanner Pearson will join Gilmour on the squad. A member of Team Canada at the 2012 junior world championships, Pearson was chosen 30th overall by the Kings in the 2012 draft.
“Tanner Pearson was a fan favourite as a Barrie Colt, made Canada proud as a World Junior and is now a proud member of the Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings family. We welcome Tanner to his first Hockey Night in Barrie appearance,” said Brown.
