SIU steps in to investigate death

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the death of a 32-year-old man who passed away after going into medical distress during booking, police report.
On Friday, June 22, at about 2:30 p.m. the man was arrested by Barrie police. He was transported to the police station where “during booking he went into medical distress,” police report, adding he “was immediately transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health (Centre) by County of Simcoe Paramedics where, a short time later, he was pronounced deceased.”
The Barrie Police Service notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate. As a result, BPS will not be able to provide any further information. Any inquiries should be directed to SIU at 1-800-787-8529, police report.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
