Cycling and texting don’t mix

A Barrie teenage girl learned the hard way not to text and cycle at the same time.
Police report the girl, 17, was transported to hospital Wednesday afternoon after colliding with a vehicle that had been backing out of a driveway. The girl was treated for minor injuries.
Upon investigation, police learned that the vehicle was backing out of a driveway on Dunlop Street, but had to stop because of passing traffic – thereby blocking the sidewalk. Police say that normally this wouldn’t have been much of a concern, but the cyclist was on the sidewalk, “while texting on her phone and not paying attention to her surroundings.”
The driver of the vehicle was charged with failing to yield from a driveway and the cyclist was charged with careless driving.
