CCTV cameras arrive in downtown Barrie

Smile Barrie, you are about to be on camera as Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras come to the downtown core.
Describing the overall goal of the project as one of enhancing and promoting public safety in the downtown, police maintain the project will also help identify people committing criminal acts, and provide a deterrent to potential crime by publicizing the presence of the CCTV system.
The City of Barrie, Downtown BIA and Barrie Police Service are partnering on the project. Cameras with the ability to tilt and zoom will be installed, starting this week, along Dunlop and Collier streets. Another camera will view the scene from a perch on Simcoe Street.
The cameras will operate on a wireless network and will be monitored in the Barrie Police Service communications centre. It’s expected the system will be fully operational in July.
