Barrie police charge HIV-positive woman

Barrie police have issued a public safety notice after arresting and charging a 38-year-old woman with aggravated assault for allegedly engaging in unprotected sex while knowingly infected with the HIV virus.
The accused, Jennifer Marie Murphy, was arrested Tuesday and is being held in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for Sept. 21. Police report that she was previously convicted in 2005 of aggravated sexual assault for having unprotected sex with two males and failing to notify them of her condition.
In that incident, she pled guilty to having unprotected sex with two men at CFB Borden, receiving a sentence of one year of house arrest at her home in Newfoundland, and three years of probation.
The accused, police believe, has been in the Barrie area for more than a month and “may have had sexual contact with various people.” Police urge anyone who had sexual contact with the accused to seek medical advice and contact the Barrie Police Service Sexual Assault Unit at 705-725-7025, ext: 2931 or 2945.
