Barrie mom faces assault charges

Deciding that the punishment did not fit the crime, Barrie police charged a mother with assaulting her nine-year-old daughter.
The woman, 49, found herself in jail Saturday night when it came to light that she had punished her nine-year-old child inappropriately, police report. The girl had injuries on both hands that suggested they had been rubbed raw with some sort of bristle pad.
Investigation revealed that, in fact, the punishment was the use of a scrub pad leaving the hands raw and chafed, police report. The mother was charged with assault causing bodily harm and later released with a court date. The child was removed from the mother’s care by the Children’s Aid Society.
