Man, 79, “jumped” in escape attempt

An elderly shopper unwittingly became embroiled in an escape attempt following an attempted theft, police report.
A woman, 32, and her son, 16, entered a Mapleview Drive business yesterday (Tuesday) and as they seemed to shop, the woman concealed some face cream on her person. She, say police, then removed a video from its packaging, and handed it to her son, after which they made their way to the front of the store.
Apparently having a change of heart, the boy put the video on a shelf at the front of the store. Once outside, mother and son were approached by store security, prompting the boy to take off. The mother was taken back into the store, where she pushed a security guard and made a break for it.
Trying to make good her escape, police say the woman jumped jumped a 79-year-old male and threw him into a shopping cart. The man fell to the ground and the woman continued to run towards the door.
The security guard tackled the woman as she exited the store and she was held for police. She was charged with theft under $5,000, assault and obstruct police. She faces a future court date. The man she accosted suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical attention.
