Shelter hosts session on responding to human trafficking

The Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie is hosting a session on Wednesday to bring agencies together to share their knowledge, expertise and tools that support sexually exploited women and girls.
It’s scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Holiday, 20 Fairview Drive. Training will include representatives from various agencies speaking about their processes and tools that they are using and their experience supporting women experiencing trafficking.
Issues up for discussion are:
• The shelter will focus on trauma informed practice
• The Elizabeth Fry Society on trafficked women and tools to identify women and red flags
• The Huronia Transition Homes will speak about their dedicated shelter spaces for trafficked women and harm reduction
• The Barrie Native Friendship Centre will speak about their services for women.
A speaker’s panel will follow presentations at the end of the day for a question, answer and discussion time to identify gaps in service. Keynote speaker is Joie Red, author of Love Letters.
