Police investigate ‘suspicious’ fire

Smoke coming from a convenience store on Owen Street Wednesday turned out to be caused by a small fire in the basement, which was quickly extinguished.
Police and fire responded to the scene. The fire, police say, appears suspicious in nature and the investigation is continuing into its cause. Due to a quick response from emergency crews, minimal damage occurred.

A male needing a ride to Midland for a court date approached Barrie police Wednesday, but was informed police don’t serve as a taxi service.
The male advised he had come from Hamilton and had to be in Midland in the morning for court. However, a short time later the make called police again, and it was found there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
He was was arrested on the strength of the warrant and turned over to OPP.
