Police connect assault to song-related slur

Barrie police are investigating a reported assault that occurred Saturday in the area of Centennial Beach.
About 3:20 a.m. police responded to the beach area, for a report of an assault that occurred south of the play structure. A female was struck in the face by a male who immediately left the park area.
Police received information before attending the area that the suspect left in a black Dodge vehicle and there were multiple males involved. Police were unable to locate a black vehicle in the area.
The assault, say police, is believed to be as result of a song-related racial slur. At this time, the investigation has revealed that remarks were made but not towards the unknown male suspect, but in reference to a song.
The male suspect was described as black, approximately 18 years old and 6’2″ tall.  He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with a red “V” on the front with a blue boarder. There were no other defining characteristics or clothing described to police.
Police are asking for assistance from the public in the event that there is a witness to the event. Anyone who may be able to assist police is asked to email the investigating officer at 7498@barriepolice.ca.
