Auction of Barrie slips making waves

The Barrie Marina will continue to make a splash following last week’s adoption of a motion to put three slips in the marina up for auction to determine market value.
The auction will see three slips auctioned off to the highest bidders, likely at the expense of city taxpayers who have been waiting a number of years on a list for slips.
At least two speakers are lined up to make deputations at council tonight (March 5) on the issue that is making waves in the city’s boating community.
The auction, suggested by Ward 10 Coun. Alex Nuttall, and supported by a majority of council, would circumvent the established procedure to getting a slip in the marina – getting your name on a list and waiting until a slip becomes available. Rather, the three slips will go to the highest bidders.
A memo from staff outlining the procedure for the auction was requested by March 30.
In sponsoring the motion, Nuttall says the city charges too little for the slips, compared to other marinas on the bay.
