Separate board names new director

The new director of the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) is no stranger to the region or the board.
Brian Beal is the board’s new director of education and secretary treasurer of the board, effective Feb. 1. He has worked for the board for more than 20 years, beginning his tenure as a high-school teacher at St. Theresa’s Catholic High School in Midland, and subsequently holding various positions, including vice-principal, principal, and most recently, executive superintendent of program and services.

Brian Beal is the new education director of the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

“I look forward to bringing my many experiences and relationships with me to my new role,” said Beal. “I truly believe that it is the concerted efforts of everyone in our school board – from the kindergarten teacher to the accounting clerk – that helps our children realize their full potential. We all have a role to play and I am excited about the work we will do together to build wonderful communities of faith.”
The new director plans to visit each school across the board in the coming weeks. Clayton Ferguson, chair of the board, said trustees look forward to working with the new director.
“We are confident that he is the right person for this important position. In addition to being visionary, Brian also has a unique blend of experience, leadership skills, values, passion, and an intimate understanding of our board that will continue to serve us very well in the future.”
Interested in social-justice issues, Beal began a program that allowed staff and students to build schools in Kenyan communities. He is the chair for the Parish Council of St. Mary’s Parish in Victoria Harbour, and is a trustee on the board of the Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland.
