Board inks deal with occasional teachers

A tentative agreement has been reached between the Simcoe Muskoka District School Board and its occasional teachers. Details of the agreement will not be released until it’s ratified by the union and the board’s trustees.
The educators are members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA). The agreement was reached Monday.
“We are extremely pleased to have reached this agreement with our occasional teachers,” said Brian Beal, director of education. “Our occasional teachers play a vital role in our classrooms as they fill in during short- and long-term teacher absences in our Catholic schools. The negotiations were respectful and reflect the positive relationship with have with our staff.”
According to Carlo Palermo, president of the OECTA Simcoe Muskoka Occasional Teachers Bargaining Unit, even though “no substantive changes were negotiated locally,” the board respected the collective bargaining process and implementing the Fair Hiring Practices, “which will serve our members well.”
The educators will vote on the agreement on Dec. 11. The school board is scheduled to vote on the agreement Dec. 5.
