A Battle of the Bands kicks off this weekend’s Celebrate Barrie community festival, Friday night on the Star Stage at Centennial Beach, starting at 7 p.m.
The Barrie Young People’s Centre is presenting the free concert that features local bands with musicians who are aged 11 to 19. The young players will be competing for prizes and acclaim as the best of the battle.
The celebration of Barrie goes on through the weekend along the waterfront. On Saturday the action runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and showcases more than 50 community groups with free activities for the family, including face painting for the kids and a petting zoo. Kids can also enjoy a rock-climbing wall and inflatable bouncers.
Performers will provide entertainment from two stages throughout the day. An historic village will illustrate what life was like in Barrie during the 19th century, and will include re-enactments, naval and military displays. Fire and police personnel will be on hand with vehicles and displays, a favourite for kids of all ages.
Later on Saturday evening, families can enjoy an evening under the stars at Centennial Beach with the Oscar-nominated animated film, How to Train Your Dragon. The curtain rises at dusk, about 9:15 p.m.
