Barrie starts to plan Culture Days

Planning for the return of Culture Days to Barrie is in motion, and the organizing committee wants to hear from community groups and individuals who have new, fresh ideas to celebrate culture in the city.
The event is slated for Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. Barrie hosted its first Culture Days last year, in part to raise the city’s arts and entertainment profile. Performances and arts display were held at 30 locations across the city. Highlights included Opera Belcanto performing a Flash Mob at the Georgian Mall, a guitar-making display at the Kozlov Centre, a series of musical workshops put on by the Barrie Folk Society, and tours of the downtown theatre that showed trailers for the 2010 Barrie Film Festival.
To get the show started, the organizing committee is holding an information session Friday, May 27, 10 a.m. in the Transit Terminal Board Room, located on the second floor at 24 Maple Avenue. Those wishing to volunteer or present ideas are invited to attend.
The theme for last year’s program was ‘Arts Presentations in Unsuspecting Places.’ Venues included recreation centres, malls, pottery studios, the library, bookstores and coffee shops.
At the May 27 meeting, Nazanin Shoja from the Culture Days provincial office will present ideas on developing Culture Days ideas. For more information contact the city’s department of culture at, or call 705-739-4299.
