Arkells ring in New Year in Barrie

One of Canada’s hottest bands is set to ring in the New Year in downtown Barrie, at the 14th annual Downtown Countdown.
The Arkells will bring their high-energy act to the stage on Collier Street outside City Hall, Dec. 31, singing songs from the debut album, Jackson Square, and its follow-up, Michigan Left. The band won a Juno Award in 2010 for new group of the year.
A tested road act, The Arkells have toured with Bedouin Soundclash, Sam Roberts Band, Metric, Pearl Jam, Tokyo Police Club, and Them Crooked Vultures. San Sebastian, an indie pop band, is booked as the opening act.
As well as music, the countdown will feature entertainment for the younger set, with the return of pop children’s act, Splash ‘n Boots. A veteran act of give albums, the band performs around the world, and has been featured on Treehouse.
Sarah Melody, a local talent, was selected to perform from a group of about 50 submissions. A local act, yet to be selected, will also perform. Other planned events include skating at the Circle at the Centre, horse-drawn wagon rides, and face painting. The evening will include two fireworks displays, one at 7:45 p.m., and the second at midnight.
