The Blue Flag is flying at the city marina, the first and only marina on Lake Simcoe to have the distinction.
Mayor Jeff Lehman and city staff helped to officially raise the Blue Flag at the marina today, the second year in a row that it has been recognized with the Blue Flag designation; this was the first official flag raising.
“The Blue Flag is a symbol of a community’s commitment to ensure that its marina is clean, safe, and sustainable for current and future generations,” said Ashley Wallis, Blue Flag Program Manager with Environmental Defence. “We are pleased to see the Blue Flag fly at the Barrie Marina.”
The Blue Flag is a world-renowned eco-certification for beaches and marinas that acknowledges that a beach or marina is clean and meets high safety and environmental standards. The award is administered in Canada by Environmental Defence and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education. To receive a Blue Flag, beaches and marinas must meet high international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and services.
Blue Flags are flying at 26 beaches and seven marinas in Canada. More details about the Blue Flag program and the certified marinas and beaches can be found at BlueFlag.ca.
