Now that spring has sprung, City Hall is launching its annual Spring into Clean program.
Residents are invited to participate in events to clean up the community. Registration is open for the events, on from April 20 to 22. They include:
• Waterfront Cleanup Day at Heritage Park: Friends, family and neighbours are encouraged to come out and clean up Barrie’s waterfront area. Supplies will be provided, as well as beverages and snacks by Tim Hortons. Registration is not required for the Waterfront Cleanup Day.
• Community Cleanup Days: All residents are encouraged to register to clean up a local public space such as a park, ravine, trail or neighbourhood park. Registrations can be submitted online, individually or as a group. By registering, you will receive the official Spring into Clean collection bags, which will ensure that the garbage you pick up is collected on Monday, April 23.
• Student Participation Day: Students are encouraged to clean up their property and adjacent parklands. Schools that register will receive enough garbage bags and gloves for each student participant to help clean up their yard and surrounding areas.
• Corporate Cleanup Days: This is a call to all businesses in Barrie to register to clean up a local public space such as a park, ravine, trail or neighbourhood park. Registrations can be submitted online, individually or as a group.
A related flag raising ceremony will take place at City Hall on April 16 at 11:30 a.m. with Mayor Jeff Lehman, staff and community members.
Spring into Clean is sponsored by Tim Hortons and garbage collection is donated by Waste Connections of Canada. The events coincide with Earth Week and are designed to clean up our community, while raising levels of environmental awareness and social responsibility. Last year, the events saw 19,141 participants collect over 7.5 tonnes of litter across 159,328 sq. meters of the city.
